The Importance of a Growth Mindset for IT Professionals

We have two IT Professionals…

  • IT Professional #1 believes that intelligence is fixed. They reach a point in their career where they feel they have reached their potential. They feel “stuck”, without opportunity for further growth.
  • IT Professional #2 believes that intelligence can be developed. They never feel like they have reached their full potential. They continue to get smarter through learning, hard work, and the help of others.

IT Professional #1 has a Fixed Mindset. IT Professional #2 has a Growth Mindset.

Which one would you rather be?

Your mindset is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you have a Fixed Mindset, you will put in less effort and sure enough, your results will confirm your belief. But, if you have a Growth Mindset, you will increase your efforts and have better results.

Having a Growth Mindset will exponentially increase the success of your IT career.

Benefits of Having a Growth Mindset

  • You Will Embrace Challenges – If you see challenges as learning opportunities you will not be intimidated by them.
  • You Will Learn From Criticism – Criticism will be seen as feedback you can learn from.
  • It will Reduce the Sting of “Impostor Syndrome” – Acknowledging you still need to grow takes the edge off.

How IT Professionals Can Develop a Growth Mindset:

  • Enjoy the Journey – The joy is in the journey, not the destination. Again, we never truly arrive. Enjoy the process.
  • ABL – “Always Be Learning” – Develop a lifelong learning habit. Read, listen to podcasts, watch videos…just keep learning.
  • Take it Easy On Yourself – Why beat yourself up over perceived limitations when you could be using that same energy to learn and ask questions?
  • Embrace Imperfection – Nobody truly “arrives”. We are all figuring it out as we go. Nobody is perfect. Our imperfections make us unique and special.

TL; DR – Don’t think in terms of limitations, think in terms of potential. A Growth Mindset will help you reach your full potential in your IT career.
